December Newsletter for Frog Owners

December, 2014

Looking for helpful information while you’re on the road?  One of the best sources might be right in your pocket.  Better yet, much of the information is free.

Both Android and Apple phones have access to great RV travel apps that can put an encyclopedia of information at your fingertips.  While this list is by no means all-inclusive, it can give you a peek at some of the resources available to you.  Here’s a sampling of what is on our phones:

Altimeter — DS Altimeter is an animated real-time elevation meter. Configuration options allow you to choose your source for elevation data including GPS Satellite based altitude or location based elevation from the United States Geologic Survey and Mapquest.

Around Me — Around Me quickly identifies your position and allows you to choose the nearest Bank, Bar, Gas Station, Hospital, Hotel, Movie Theater, Restaurant, Supermarket, Live Theater and Taxi.  The app shows you a complete list of all the businesses in the category you have selected, along with the distance from where you are, photos, ratings, and, in the case of some of the restaurants, menus.

Allstays Big Truck Stops — Big Truck Stops checks your location and displays all truck stops on a map view with their own unique icon. Or get a text list of the nearest points to you right now. You can filter by brand or by amenities to see only what you want to see. Use the offline manual lookup to find locations by type, state and city – even without service. This app covers the five major truck stops — Flying J Travel Plazas, Loves Travel Stops, TA Travel Centers, Pilot, and Petro Stopping Centers.

Allstays Camp & RV — One of the most popular camping apps, it lets you find and filter both places and services with or without internet.  The app includes over 28,000 campgrounds: (US & Canada), including private; National & State Forests; National, State, County, and City Parks; BLM; Corps of Engineers; military famcaps; and multiple national chains and discount program campgrounds.  Campground details include website, phone number, directions, open season, rate range, sites, hookups, amps, big rigs access, tents or no tents, clubs, water, showers, toilets, tables, pool, playground, laundry, propane, pet-friendly, RV dump station, age restrictions, storage, firewood, boat launch, seasonal sites and internet access.

If you’re just looking for a place to overnight, Camp & RV provides information on Wal-Marts (with overnight parking reports), Sam’s Club and Cosco; overnight parking at casinos, Elks Lodges and other places; truck stops with amenities; stores (Camping World, REI, Cabelas, Gander, Dicks, Bass Pro Shops); RV dealers and services; RV Rental locations; Rest Areas, Welcome centers, turn outs, and service plazas by heading; and steep grades and runaway truck ramps in the western US.

Coach-Net — Coach-Net Mobile app enables members to quickly and easily request roadside assistance in just a few simple steps. Enter and save your Member information one time only, select the type of service you are requesting and then push the ‘Call for Service’ button. It’s that simple! Leverage Coach-Net’s nationwide 24/7 roadside service provider network and your phone’s GPS capabilities to route assistance directly to your location.

Benefits to Coach-Net members:

· Access towing and roadside services while traveling throughout the United States and Canada

· With a simple screen tap, connect to professional, friendly service available 24/7, 365 days a year

· Enjoy convenient “sign and go” service with no payment required for roadside services covered up to your plan’s benefit limit*

· Stores your membership profile information for faster service; no fumbling around to find your membership card and number.
*Members are responsible for payment to the independent service provider for any charges exceeding the plan benefit limit per disablement. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the current Member Benefit Guide. Services provided to individuals who are not Coach-Net members are subject to fees.

Forest River RV Owner Kit — It is Forest River’s mission to help all our customers enjoy their RV experience to the fullest. The Forest River RV Owner Digital Kit App provides a dynamic owner experience to both current and new owners with information on their recreational vehicle that is clear and concise, allowing users to quickly find and understand the features and benefits of their RV. In addition to Owner Manuals, the App provides in-depth informational videos and links to Manufacturer documentation.  While the manuals are those for 2015 models, much of the information also applies to older units, and the interactive links to various component suppliers allow users to go directly to those suppliers’ websites for more detailed information.

Gas Buddy — Find Cheap Gas Prices with one tap.  Find cheapest gas by city/zip/postal code.  Using the GPS feature, locate cheapest fuel near you, sorted by price or by distance from your location.  Filter by regular, premium, or diesel.  Save money, and have a chance to win prizes by reporting on prices in your area.

Love’s Connect — No matter where you are in the country, this app finds the nearest store based upon your location, city, state or zip code, including driving directions.  It displays real-time fuel prices along with features and amenities of each location.

My Pilot / Flying J — MyPilot is Pilot Flying J’s official app.  Features include

*Get a bird’s eye view of the Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J locations in your area
*See the locations in a traditional map, satellite or hybrid view
*One button calling to any location right from inside the app
*Displays the nearest location to you and shows its current fuel prices
*Find all locations that have DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) at the pumps
*Easily find amenities that YOU are looking for using simple search function
*Plan your trip by entering start and end points and find locations along the way.
*Check and compare fuel pricing for all grades at every single location
*Need help? Contact our Customer Service team right from the app!

Road Ninja — Road Ninja was named one of the “10 Best Apps for Traveling Like a Local” by  If you’re traveling the Interstates, know what’s coming up at the next exit, compare gas prices, scroll through exits, use search to find out what’s ahead.   If you’re not on the Interstate, turn on “nearby” mode and see what’s close by.  Get directions to locations, view locations in Google’s panoramic street view, and read reviews.  Change default categories displayed at each exit, choosing from 30 options.

TA/Petro Truck Smart — TA and Petro offer diesel and gasoline fueling services, full and quick-serve restaurants, heavy truck maintenance services, 24-hour c-stores, WIFI and more.  Truck Smart includes an interactive map displaying the sites that are within 250 miles from your current location; complete list of amenities at each site; locations by distance as well as by highway and state look up; current fuel prices, turn by turn directions; weather, and more.

Wal-Mart —  This app identifies the Wal-Mart stores nearest your location and shows them on a map.  It also provides information on whether the location allows overnighting.  Recently added is the Savings Catcher, which allows you to scan your Wal-Mart receipt, locate any lower prices in the area for the same item, and receive the difference on a gift card. You can also order online, or get prices, product information, and reviews on in-store items by scanning the bar codes.

So there you have it.  I’ve not mentioned the app that allows us to check the length of lines at Walt Disney World (although we’ve not been there for years), or the Google Maps and other navigation aids, but you get the idea.

Check our your Apple Store or Google Play Store online to see what might be available to help you in your travels, and feel free to share any great finds so that we can pass them along.

Prime Time Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Forest River Inc., has announced the release of its new Crusader Lite half-ton series fifth-wheel line.

“The Crusader Lite has been engineered to be the smallest and lightest fifth-wheel ever offered from Prime Time. Our product team has worked hard to help create a super light, fully-featured fifth-wheel that has dazzling looks,” said Jeff Wagner, product manager for Crusader.

“Even though our current Crusader is retailing well for our dealers, we recognized an additional opportunity to better meet the growing customer demand for lighter weight and more affordable fifth-wheels.”

Prime Time is in full production with the new product and units have started to arrive at many dealer locations.  Three Way Campers of Marietta, Ga., received one of the first Crusader Lite 28RL models.

Owner David Porter offered, “The all-new Crusader Lite arrived with an easy-to-tow weight, has awesome eye appeal, and is priced exactly where it needs to be. After we received our first 28RL, we sold it in only a matter of hours.”

The Crusader Lite features champagne high-gloss fiberglass, aerodynamic Super-Turn colored front cap, LED lighted awning and large pass-through storage on the exterior.  The interior offers upgraded residential furniture, LED ceiling lights, residential sized showers, designer window treatment, and abundant kitchen storage.

Crusader Lite has a base MSRP of $38,900.

RV News Magazine reports that RVDA, the Recreational Vehicle Dealers Association, honored several RV brands with its Quality Circle Award in Louisville, KY, on December 1, just prior to the opening of the National RV Trade Show.

These brands/manufacturers received at least 15 dealer responses and scored 80 percent or above in overall dealer satisfaction in the association’s 21st Annual Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey.  “The DSI Quality Circle Award recognizes RV brands that deal ers tell us are doing a superior job with their overall approach to building products and supporting dealers. Their focus on quality allows us to provide our customers with a great overall RV experience,” said RVDA Chairman of the Board John McCluskey of Stuart, FL-based Florida Outdoors RV Center.

Among the towable RV manufacturers/brands receiving awards are Forest River’s Rockwood division for Travel Trailers & Fifth Wheels and Rockwood Roo Expandables, and Prime Time Manufacturing for itS Avenger, Crusader, Lacrosse, Sanibel, Spartan, and Tracer lines — virtually a clean sweep for Prime Time.

When rating their brands / manufacturers, RVDA asks dealers to express, confidentially, their level of satisfaction on eight core issues:

  • Sales support
  • Sales territory
  • Vehicle design
  • Vehicle reliability/quality
  • Competitive price/value
  • Parts support
  • Dealership warranty support
  • Overall dealer communications

Four hundred and twenty-three (423) dealers from the U.S. and Canada responded to the DSI this year and provided 2,386 brand ratings, an average of 5.6 per dealer.

RVDA is the national association representing RV retailers. The association’s members include RV dealers, RV rental operators, and RV AfterMarket sales and service locations. RVDA of Canada is a national, volunteer federation of provincial and regional RVDA associations which exists to protect and promote the interests and welfare of RV Dealers across Canada in order to enable the industry to maximize its potential.

About smokeycamping

Well let's see have lived in NY for my whole life, have always loved the outdoors (as long as it is warm out) have always hated the cold, and like a dummy have stayed in NY. But now with my second try my wife, we have been camping now for well over 25 yrs. We currently own a 2010 Cedar creek silverback 35TS and can not wait to get out on the highways and see this great country we all call home. Hope to see every National park before my medical issue becomes too bad to travel. I love my African gray parrot (she is my baby) and have two dogs at the time brother and sister mutts, but love them all the same. Have always been a big Nascar fan, love computers (have a number of certificates to build and work on them) am trying to learn photography, enjoy light hiking, being with good friends and folks. country music, pop music and just being outdoors. So I hope someday to meet some of the great people who like what I like and post out there in some great campground somewhere in the country, till then I will keep posting and I hope you keep liking.
